What are title tags and meta descriptions?
Title tags are HTML elements unique to each web page and are displayed in search engine results. Title tags are displayed on the search engine results page, and when clicked, take the viewer directly to your web page. They are up to 60 characters long and also displayed at the top of your browser. Meta descriptions are content summary snippets that show up in search results under the title tag and can be up to 160 characters long.
How to Write Effective Title Tags
Title tags should be clear and concise for bullet-fast readability. They must be descriptive of your web page and contain keywords (the name of your business) in order to be SEO effective. They display your title, and is a search visitor’s first glimpse of your site. When writing your title tags, get to the point but don’t be too fancy. For example, if you are writing the title tag for your barber shop website, use the keyword “barber” not “pogonotrophy” which is a really cool word but what the heck does it mean. The chances of a visitor typing pogonotrophy into a search engine when searching for a barber shop is incredibly thin.
How to Write Effective Meta Descriptions
Optimizing your meta description is very important for your website’s SEO because the search engines will show your meta when the search phrase is found in your description. That means that your business is found and this is why it is important to keep your keywords up front in your page content, and write clearly and succinctly about your business. For example, if you are writing content for your barber shop but your content is all about your love of classic cars, potential customers won’t find you when they Google or Bing “barber shops.”
The first sentence in your HOME or ABOUT page should have your company name, what you do and where you are located. For example; Harry’s Barber Shop in Kamloops BC is locally famous for haircuts, beard and mustache styling. After your introduction is complete, take that copy and place it into the meta description field for your page. Each page of your site should have its own unique description. Also, remember only 160 characters will show up in the search results. Get to the point fast and use your main keywords.
